June 26, 2017

I was shocked and very saddened to learn of the sudden passing of my Amherst Central classmate and friend, Michael R. Lavin, on June 24th at too young an age.  Mike was one of my most respected, brightest and most diligent high school classmates and friends.  He sat next to me (Mike to my right; Mark Maefs to my left) for three years in Truman Beckley Brown's (1969-71) and later Edward Benjamin's (1971-72) home room, 215. Mike was a model student - a teacher's dream: intelligent, quiet, unassuming, hard working and consistently excelling in all curricular subjects. He was a great friend with a keen sense of humor and a laugh to match it. He was the only classmate at Amherst Central to e-mail me "out of the blue" decades after our graduation to congratulate me on my academic and professional achievements.  Mike will be sadly missed but always remembered with great admiration.
