In Memory Alumni

Victoria Holder - Class Of 1965

Victoria Holder, lecturer in the Composition for Multilingual Students (CMS) Program at San Francisco State University, 1983-2011, died February 6, 2020. She received a B.A. from New York University (1969) and M.A. in English from SF State (1983). Vicky engaged students in learning with her creativity, wry humor, and love of language, qualities apparent in two published texts: Grammar on the Go, a source of ideas for communicative grammar activities, and Inside Out/Outside In, Exploring American Literature, which she co-authored with CMS colleagues. At the time of her death, Vicky was traveling several times a year, to collaborate with a former SF State student in Seoul, South Korea, developing curriculum and writing textbooks, including over thirty-three story books for children, for innovative English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching. Adept at language learning herself, Vicky studied and communicated in several languages, including Russian, Korean, Spanish, French, and Czech. Active in a number of local organizations, Vicky volunteered at the SF State and San Francisco Public Libraries, ReCares, medical equipment donation center, and the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. She enjoyed participating in the San Francisco Gem & Mineral Society and was active in community theater, directing a number of local opera productions. Vicky’s love of theater came from her years as a teenager and adult working as stage manager at a place close to her heart in northwestern New York, the Chautauqua Institution, a nonprofit education center devoted to music and the arts. Smart, funny, creative, and generous, Vicky Holder will be sorely missed. I loved Vicki, what a gal! She was my super high-school pal! Musical director, always in the wings; Any opera tune her brain always sings. Funny, witty, VERY smart, She also had a great big heart! (Becky Askin - friend for 60 years)
