Richard Tolsma - Class Of 1948

TOLSMA - Richard G.
November 28, 2021, surrounded by loved ones, at age 91. Survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Elaine Tolsma; devoted father of Darcy (Thomas) Spengler, Tracy (Michael) Riegel, Jody (Scott) Kuppinger, Randy (Robyn) and Terry (Kathy) Tolsma, and the late Wendy (Scott) Wexler and Gregory (MaryAnn Thomann) Tolsma; cherished grandfather of 19 and great-grandfather of 13; son of the late Herbert and Genevieve Tolsma; dearest brother of Judy (Ron) Benson and the late Herbert Jr. (Alice), Nancy Smith Bell and Donald (Maxine); also survived by many relatives and friends. Richard was a Physical Education teacher with the Amherst School District, as well as a former student and President of his senior class. He completed his Bachelor and Master degrees at SUNY Buffalo, where he played basketball. He was a long serving board member of the Amherst Federal Credit Union and served in the Coast Guard Reserve. Richard was proud of his family and always put them first. His loving and caring nature will be truly missed. He was an avid outdoors-man and enjoyed spending time at Honeoye Lake with family and friends. Richard was a highly respected teacher and was known for his positive nature, sense of humor and patience. He had a detailed memory for names and story telling. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, December 1st, from 4-8 PM at MESNEKOFF FUNERAL HOME, 8630 Transit Rd., E. Amherst 14051. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 3rd, at 9 AM at St. Leo the Great Church, 885 Sweet Home Rd., Amherst 14226. Please assemble at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UB Athletics Blue and White Fund and the Amherst Central School District c/o The Richard Tolsma Memorial Physical Education Scholarship.
