Anton C Schwarzmueller

Jan. 28, 1937 – Oct. 23, 2013

Anton Charles Schwarzmueller, retired principal of Amherst Middle School, died Wednesday in St. Francis Nursing Home, Williamsville, after a long illness. He was 76.

Born in Buffalo, he attended School 78 and was a graduate of Kensington High School.

While attending Buffalo State Teachers College, he was an assistant to the dean, worked at a supermarket in the Kensington neighborhood and worked nights in the chemical lab at Bethlehem Steel.

After completing his student teaching in Amherst Junior High School in 1958, he was hired to teach ninth-grade English and social studies at Amherst. He was promoted to curriculum coordinator and then principal. He also served briefly as interim school superintendent. He retired as principal in 1996.

Mr. Schwarzmueller was president of the Amherst teachers union and taught law to police academy students at Erie Community College. After he retired, he taught for 12 years in the Education Department at Daemen College.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, the former Kathleen Murphy; three sons, Anton A., Eric A. and Kristopher A.; three daughters, Molly B. Chalupsky, Amy Matuszewski and Rosemarie F. Dorn; and a brother, Paul.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive at Hopkins Road, Amherst.
