June 26, 2004 - Herbert H. Wilber Jr., a retired Amherst High School guidance counselor and active member of area clubs and organizations, died Saturday in his Amherst home. He was 80.
A native of Torrington, Conn., he earned an associate's degree at Teachers College of Connecticut in New Britain and a bachelor's degree in physical education from Springfield College in Massachusetts.
He later received a master's degree from the University of Michigan. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946 and was discharged as a staff sergeant.
From 1948 until 1966, Mr. Wilber held teaching and coaching positions in a number of school districts in Maine and Connecticut. A couple of the teams he coached won state championships.
In 1967, he became a guidance counselor at Amherst High School, where he worked until his retirement in 1987. He also was faculty adviser to the Varsity Club at the school.
Mr. Wilber enjoyed swimming, coaching, refereeing, golf, many organized team sports, camping, canoeing and walking.
He was a member of the Amherst Retired Teachers, Amherst Male Glee Club and Christ United Methodist Church. He also was past president of the Amherst Central Lions Club and the local chapter of the American Field Service.
Survivors include his wife, the former Correnne Salmond; a daughter, Elaine M. Bader of Brockport; two sons, Bruce A. of Rossmore, Calif., and Herbert M. of Amherst; a sister, Barbara Eichman of Landisville, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service Tuesday at Christ United Methodist Church, 350 Saratoga Rd., corner of Harlem, at 11 AM.
