Elisabeth WELCH Obituary
WELCH - Elisabeth Ann "Lisa"
55, of Golden, Colorado died in a tragic hiking accident on September 4th, 2017. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Lisa had lived her adult years in Cambridge, MA and Dallas, TX. She and her husband Rich were avid travelers and hikers, and they had seen much of the world with packs on their backs. They were in the Swiss Alps at the time of the accident. Lisa had an early love for the wider world. She learned several languages, and during her college years at the University at Buffalo she worked as a multilingual tour guide at Niagara Falls. After graduating with honors from UB, she came to Boston and spent more than a decade traveling the world as a consultant for AIRINC. In 1990, she was involved in a hijacking in Myanmar, but even that didn't dampen her adventurous spirit. She thought she hated math, but discovered she had a knack for organization, numbers and analysis. So she taught herself the math she had passed over in high school, and went on to earn an MBA from MIT's Sloan School. She then relocated to Dallas, spending the rest of her career in the business side at American Airlines. It was in Texas that she met Rich, whose love for exploring complemented hers. He took her hiking and she took him around the world. They made good use of her flight benefits to combine the two. She retired from AA a year ago. Lisa was a wonderful cook, a generous friend, an efficient organizer, an avid reader and ready for anything. She was both a Dead-head and a fitness geek. She loved the Welch family camp on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. On a dare, she started a Christmas Day skinny-dip tradition there that has lasted for over a decade. She is survived by her husband, Richard Schiebel; her father Claude Welch and stepmother Jeannette Ludwig; her sisters, Sarah Welch (and husband Jon Riedel) and Martha Dyer (and husband George Dyer); her brother Chris Welch (and wife Maddie Welch); her aunt and uncle, Marylou and John Welch; close cousins, Evan Welch (and wife Emily Welch) and Tyler Welch (and fiancee Sarah Badami). She is also survived by ten nieces and nephews. Lisa was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Welch, who passed in 1979. A memorial service will take place at the Welch Camp in Wolfeboro, NH on October 28th. Donations in Lisa's memory can be made to Planned Parenthood or Habitat for Humanity.
