DAVID MAUL OBITUARY

David Maul was born to Mary Onofrio Maul and Wilber George Maul in Buffalo, NY. David passed on December 12, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Gayle Maul, his daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Michael Webb, his son Michael Maul, his grandson Dylan Webb, his sister Susan Mittlesteadt, Nephew James Mittlesteadt, Niece Jennifer Drake Mittlesteadt, Niece Jill Magno Mittlesteadt, and Spanish son Miguel Garay Auban.
David grew up outside of Buffalo, NY, and attended the State University College at Buffalo to attain his teaching degree. While there he met and married Gayle, the love of his life and his bride for over 65 years.
Before finishing his teaching degree, he joined the NY State National Guard, and upon finishing his degree, started his teaching career at Eggert Road Elementary School. Son Michael arrived soon thereafter, followed two years later by daughter Michele.
Professionally, David garnered achievement and recognition with two different but overlapping careers; one in education and the other in the military.
In education, after eight years of successful teaching and obtaining a master's degree, he began serving as both teacher and administrator, then rising to become the principal of Eggert Road Elementary School several years later. From Eggert Road, he moved to the larger Windemere Elementary School, becoming the senior elementary school principal within the school division until his retirement.
In the military, after starting out in an artillery battery in the NY State National Guard and rising to second lieutenant, David went on to join the US Army Reserves, primarily serving in Civil Affairs and engineering training battalions. He rose to full colonel and retired after serving more than thirty years of military service. In this, as well as with his education career, he was recognized as an excellent administrator and leader of people.
These traits served him well upon his retirement. While still living in NY State, he joined the NY State Guard, the state's official defense force that supports the National Guard when it is deployed. He served as Chief of Staff for this organization for a handful of years with the rank of brigadier general. Upon moving to TN to be part of grandson Dylan's life, David joined the local flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he eventually moved up to being the Commodore over all the flotillas in the region covering much of the central part of the country. In recent years, he utilized his education background to teach boating safety classes and to proctor tests for those pursuing a motorboat license.
David Maul was a loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. Despite having two careers, he still found time to take the family on many wonderful visits around the country, supported his wife as she pursued her teaching career, provided unconditional love and support to his children as they became successful and independent adults, and showed his family and those who he met what it means to be a good and decent man.
David loved to hunt, fish, motorboat, shoot skeet, take trips with wife Gayle, and watch his grandson grow up to be an amazing young man. He always found joy in teaching, and always worked to help others be successful. He was proud of his children, son-in-law, and grandson, but humble concerning himself. He helped make this world a better place, for which we are grateful. He will be sorely missed but always a joy in our memories.
