William Saad - Class Of 1961

 

 Dr. William Lawrence Saad June20,1943-Feb. 22,2012 Dr. William Lawrence Saad, 68, Hollidaysburg, died Wednesday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. He was bom in Ridgeway, N.J., son of the late Louis E. and Thelma M. Saad. He married Barbara “Bonnie” Coughlin on July 4,1963. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Dr. Michelle H. Barnes (David); a son, Joseph (Taylor Hook); six grandchildren: Alyssa Saad Shrestha (Sujal), Joey Saad Jr., Shannon and Shane Barnes and Jaden and Addison Saad; a brother, Louis E. Jr. (Mary Nancy); numerous nieces and nephews; and two brothers-in-law: Daniel (Therese) and Richard (Elizabeth) Coughlin. He also is survived by two aunts: Beatrice Bach and Marie Saad; his father-in-law, Maurice Coughlin of Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg; and many cousins with whom he enjoyed visiting at the annual Saad reunions. Dr. Saad was an optometrist and owner of Tile Brande Saad Group with locations in Altoona and State College. He was a graduate of Amherst High School in Amherst, N.Y., Erie Community College, the University at Buffalo with a B.S. in biology and the Illinois College of Optometry with a Doctorate of Optometry. He moved to Altoona in 1977 and purchased The Brande Saad Group from Dr. Harold Brande in 1980. He loved his practice and his staff who enabled him to help so many people. Dr. Saad was a former board member of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and Park Hills Country Club, former president of the Laurel Highlands American Wine Society, a founding investor of The Blairmont Club and a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont. In addition, he was on the fundraising committee for the Mielnik’s One-Eye Golf Challenge, providing educational scholarships for the visually impaired in Blair County, and was on the committee for the Miss Pennsylvania Scholarship Pageant when it was based in Altoona. Dr. Saad courageously fought a battle with transitional cell carcinoma for 22 years. Throughout the years, he was always optimistic and never let his illness overtake his love of living. He enjoyed spending time with his family and the PALS, playing golf and gin with his Park Hills friends, traveling, gardening and cooking. There will be no visitation at the request of the deceased. A private funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, East Aurora, N.Y., with committal at Lakeside Cemetery, Hamburg, N.Y. Arrangements are by The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona (www.stevensmortuary .com), and the Kenneth Howe Funeral Home, East Aurora, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where Dr. Saad’s fetter had been on the first Board of Governors of ALSAC, a fundraising organ ization for St Jude’s founded by Danny Thomas; or the Mielnik’s One-Eye Golf Challenge, a fundraiser for the Blair County Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 300 Fifth Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
