James West

James Dayton West, a high school physical-education teacher and coach, died Wednesday after a brief illness in his Kenmore home. He was 66.

West starred in football and track at Kenmore West High School and received a track scholarship to Ithaca College. He earned his bachelor's degree from Ithaca College and his master's degree from the University at Buffalo.

Mr. West was a physical-education teacher at Amherst Central School and coached football, track and gymnastics. He retired in 1996 after 30 years of service.

An accomplished magician, he was member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He was also a member of the Sheridan Golf Club and the Hole in One Club.

An avid water skier, Mr. West also enjoyed tennis, cross-country skiing and in-line skating.

Friends remember him as skilled cook who also enjoyed playing tour guide for visiting friends.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Constance Oates of Kenmore; two daughters, Linda M. of Santa Monica, Calif., and Cheryl A. Patchett of Elma; a son, Michael L. of Kenmore; a sister, Margaret Fox of the Town of Tonawanda; and four grandchildren.

A service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Dengler-Roberts Funeral Home, 3000 Delaware Ave., Kenmore. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.

He was a fine man and a great teacher. One of my favorites.
